What To Do When A Baby Is Born In Islam

Scholars say there’s no specific action required before a baby’s birth, but you can recite general prayers for the baby’s safety, guidance, and well-being.

When the baby is born:

  • Do tahnik: put something sweet like dates or honey in the baby’s mouth
  • Pray for the baby
  • Name the baby on the first day or seventh day
  • Perform ‘aqiqah: slaughter an animal, remove the foreskin (for boys), and give the baby a name
  • Shave the baby’s head

‘Aqiqah benefits:

  • Brings the child close to Allah
  • Ransoms the child, allowing them to intercede for their parents
  • Sacrifices for the newborn, like Allah ransomed Isma’il with a ram

Recite Adhan in the baby’s right ear, so the first thing they hear is the words of Tawhid. There’s no requirement to recite Iqamah in the left ear.

May Allah protect us, our children, and keep them safe and sound in this world and the Hereafter. May Allah bless our Prophet Muhammad.”
