اللهم إني عبدُك وابنُ عبدِك وابنُ أَمَتِك، ناصِيَتِي بِيَدِكَ، مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ، أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ، سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ، أَوْ أَنْزَلْتَهُ فِي كِتَابِكَ ،أَوْ عَلَّمْتَهُ أَحَداً مِنْ خَلْقِكَ، أَوِ اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِي عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ: أَنْ تَجْعَلَ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيعَ قَلْبِي، وَنُورَ صَدْرِي، وَجَلَاءَ حُزْنِي، وَذَهَابَ هَمِّي

Transliteration

The dua is transliterated as Allaahumma ‘innee ‘abduka, ibnu ‘abdika, ibnu ‘amatika, naasiyatee biyadika, maadhin fiyya hukmuka, ‘adlun fiyya qadhaa’uka, ‘as’aluka bikulli ismin huwa laka, sammayta bihi nafsaka, ‘aw ‘anzaltahu fee kitaabika, ‘aw ‘allamtahu ‘ahadan min khalqika, ‘awista’tharta bihi fee ‘ilmil-ghaybi ‘indaka, ‘an taj’alal-Qur’aana rabee’a qalbee, wa noora sadree, wa jalaa’a huznee, wa thahaaba hammee.

Allahumma Inni Abduka Dua Meaning in English

Allahumma inni abduk means O Allaah, I am Your slave, the son of Your male slave, the son of Your female slave. My forelock is in Your Hand, Your predestination is applying on me, and Your ruling regarding me is just. I ask You by every Name of Yours, that You names Yourself, taught to one of Your creation, sent in Your Book, or kept exclusive to knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Qur’aan the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the removal of my sadness, and the thing that causes my worries to depart, Allaah will remove their worries and sadness and will replace it with relief.

Hadith Text

This dua is highly regarded and comes from the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Abdullah ibn Mas‘ood, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“No person, when stricken by anxiety or with sorrow, says the above dua except that Allah removes from him his anxiety and sorrow, and replaces them with comfort and happiness.“

He (Ibn Masood) said: They (the Companions) asked: “Should we not learn (memorize) this?” He said: Yes! Whoever hears this should learn (memorize) it.

Starting with oneself, then acknowledging one’s parents, and even tracing back to our earliest ancestors like Adam and Eve, all are part of Allah’s creation.

Allah alone manages our affairs and provides for us. We depend entirely on Him for our needs, and without His help, even for the smallest moment, we cannot survive.

Only Allah can offer us protection and refuge. This prayer demonstrates complete submission, humility, and acknowledgment of our servitude and obedience to Allah alone. It’s not just saying “I am Your slave,” but also recognizing our lineage, emphasizing our humility and servitude to Allah.

The phrase “my forelock is in Your Hand” acknowledges that Allah has control over everything. It signifies that Allah holds power over every aspect of our lives, and He can guide us in any direction He chooses. Allah’s decisions are final, and no one can oppose or overturn them.

This dua is significant because of its perfect wording, profound meaning, and noble objective. It reminds us of our dependence on Allah and reinforces our submission to His will. It’s a powerful reminder of our place in the universe and our reliance on Allah’s guidance and mercy.

When we say, “Your Command over me is forever executed,” it means that Allah’s commands, both religious and universal, are always carried out.

This includes everything from the laws Allah has given us to follow to the natural order of life and death, giving and withholding, and more.

These commands are enforced upon us whether we agree with them or not. While we cannot resist Allah’s universal decree, some people choose to disobey His religious commands and will face consequences on Judgment Day.

When we add, “Your decree over me is just,” we’re affirming that everything Allah decrees, whether it’s health or sickness, wealth or poverty, ease or hardship, is fair and just. There is wisdom behind every decision Allah makes.

It’s important to follow this etiquette of humility, obedience, and acknowledgment of Allah’s greatness when making dua, or supplication, to Him. By doing so, our prayers are more likely to be answered quickly, especially since Allah is the most generous and bountiful.

When Allah intends to bless His servants, nothing can prevent His favor from reaching them.

Therefore, when we approach Allah with humility, obedience, and a sincere desire to follow His commands, our prayers are more likely to be granted, guided by the wisdom of our generous Lord.

“I ask You by every Name belonging to You” means I seek closeness to You, Allah, by invoking all Your beautiful names.

When we say, “that You make the Qur’an the life of my heart,” we’re asking Allah to fill our hearts with happiness and rejuvenation, especially like how we feel during the spring season when our hearts are at ease and filled with joy.

This dua reflects the idea that just as spring brings relief from the harshness of winter, the Qur’an brings comfort and joy to our hearts, relieving us from anxiety and distress.

By asking Allah to illuminate our hearts with the light of the Qur’an, we seek clarity in distinguishing between belief and disbelief, truth and falsehood. We also ask for relief from the tightness in our chests and the darkness of ignorance and neglect.

Furthermore, we ask for the Qur’an to be a source of healing, providing comfort and removing sorrow and anxiety from our lives.

Understanding the profound meaning of this dua and its ability to fulfill our needs, it’s no wonder the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged us to memorize it.
