Sheikh Ibn Uthaimeen, when explaining Riyadus Saliheen, talked about a hadith that shows the importance of making supplications. These are prayers that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say and encouraged others to say too.

One of these prayers is from Imraan bin Hussain (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say:

“O Allah! Inspire in me guidance and deliver me from the evils within myself,” and in another version, “And save me from the evil of my soul.”

When we say “Allahumma al-himni rushdi,” we’re asking Allah to help us find the right path. This is important because guidance means staying away from doing wrong things like sinning or causing harm.

When we’re guided, we become successful. This is what believers aim for, and Allah even says in the Quran that He makes faith beloved to believers and dislikes disbelief and wrongdoing. So, asking for guidance is a way to seek success and righteousness.

When you say “O Allah! Inspire in me guidance and deliver me from the evils within myself,” you’re asking Allah for two important things.

  1. “Inspire in me guidance”: This part is like saying, “Help me find the right path in life.” It’s asking Allah to show you what’s right and guide you to make good choices.
  2. “Deliver me from the evils within myself”: Here, you’re asking for protection from the bad things inside yourself, like selfishness, anger, or doing things that are wrong. It’s like asking, “Please keep me away from the things that might make me do bad stuff or harm others.”

So, altogether, this dua is a way of asking Allah to help you stay on the right path and protect you from the bad thoughts and actions that might come from within yourself. It’s a way of seeking guidance and strength to be a better person.
