The dua “Allahumma Rabba Jibril Wa Mikail” is a dua recited by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) before his night prayer, seeking Allah’s guidance and judgment in matters of disagreement and asking to be led to the truth on the straight path.

The dua is written in Arabic as:

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ جَبْرَائِيلَ وَمِيكَائِيلَ وَإِسْرَافِيلَ. فَاطِرَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ. عَالِمَ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ. أَنْتَ تَحْكُمُ بَيْنَ عِبَادِكَ فِيمَا كَانُوا فِيهِ يَخْتَلِفُونَ. اهْدِنِي لِمَا اخْتُلِفَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْحَقِّ بِإِذْنِكَ إِنَّكَ تَهْدِي مَنْ تَشَاءُ إِلَى صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ

Transliteration

The prayer is transliterated as Allaahumma Rabba Jabr’eela wa Mikaa’eela wa Israafeel, faatir al-samawaati wa’l-ard, ‘aalim al-ghaybi wash-shahaadah, anta tahkumu bayna ‘ibaadika fima kaanu fihi yakhtalifoon, ihdini limakh-tulifa fihi min al-haqq bi idhnik, innaka tahdi man tasha’u ila siraatin mustaqeem.

Allahumma Rabba Jibril means O Allaah, Lord of Jibraeel, Mikael and Israfeel, You are the Originator of the heavens and the earth, the One who has all knowledge of the unseen and what is visible. You judge between Your worshippers in what they differ, guide me to the truth by Your permission in what they differ, indeed You are the One who guides whom You want to the straight path.

Hadith Text

‘Abd al-Rahman b. ‘Auf reported: I asked ‘A’isha, the mother of the believers, (to tell me) the words with which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commenced the prayer when he got up at night.

She said: When he got up at night he would commence his prayer with these words:

O Allah, Lord of Gabriel, and Michael, and Israfil, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, Who knowest the unseen and the seen; Thou decidest amongst Thy servants concerning their differences. Guide me with Thy permission in the divergent views (which the people) hold about Truth, for it is Thou Who guidest whom Thou wilt to the Straight Path.

Allahumma Rabba Jibril Wa Mikail

Shaykh ul-Islam Ibn Taymeeyah explained that as servants of Allah, we are greatly in need of seeking knowledge and guidance from others, asking for help, and then turning to Allah in remembrance and acknowledging our dependence on Him.

This is beautifully illustrated in a dua that begins with praising Allah’s greatness and expressing our reliance on Him.

In this dua, we invoke the names of the three greatest angels: Jibril, Mika’il, and Israfil. Jibril is responsible for revealing the Quran, which nourishes our hearts and souls.

Israfil will blow the horn on the Day of Judgment, bringing life after death and resurrecting people. Mika’il is in charge of rainfall, which brings life to the earth and allows plants to grow.

By recognizing Allah as the Lord of these angels and the Creator of everything, we affirm His greatness and ask for His guidance in our prayers.

We start by praising His attributes and acknowledging His role as the ultimate arbitrator and judge.

Asking Allah to guide us in matters of dispute shows our trust in His wisdom and justice. It sets the tone for our prayer, reminding us to seek guidance from Allah in all aspects of our lives.

This dua exemplifies the ideal way to begin our prayers, with humility, praise, and a sincere request for guidance from the One who knows all and has power over all.

It’s a reminder for all of us to start our prayers in this manner, recognizing our dependence on Allah and seeking His guidance in all things.
