In Which Surah is Hasbunallahu wa ni mal Wakeel?

Hasbunallahu wa ni’mal Wakeel is in surah Al Imran, second longest surah in the Quran, verse 173. The full ayat is:

ٱلَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا۟ لَكُمْ فَٱخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَـٰنًا وَقَالُوا۟ حَسْبُنَا ٱللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ ٱلْوَكِيلُ

“Those (i.e., believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, “verily, the people (pagans) have gathered against you (a great army), therefore fear them, but it (only) increased them in faith, and they said: “Allah (Alone) is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs (for us).”

Surah Al Imran verse 173

This verse was revealed regarding the Companions of the Prophet (may Allah be pleased with them) when they suffered injuries, bruises and death during the Battle of Uhud.

Thereafter, they were informed that Abu Sufyan had decided to return and has gathered people against them.

So, the Prophet (SAW) encouraged them to face him. They responded positively to Allah and His Messenger after they had sustained injuries and had been afflicted with this great misfortune.

Seventy of them had been killed as martyrs in the cause of Allah. The Prophet (SAW) and others had undergone untold hardship but they still responded to Allah and His Messenger.

Hadith On Hasbunallahu wa Ni’mal Wakeel

Some of the authentic Hadith about these four beautiful words are from Sahih al-Bukhari and Riyadus Saliheen:

Hadith #1

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: ‘Allah is Sufficient for us and He Is the Best Disposer of affairs,” was said by Abraham when he was thrown into the fire; and it was said by Muhammad when they (i.e. hypocrites) said, “A great army is gathering against you, therefore, fear them,” but it only increased their faith and they said: “Allah is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer (of affairs, for us).”

Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “How can I feel at ease when the Angel of the Trumpet, (Israfil) has put his lips to the Trumpet and is waiting for the order to blow it”.

He (ﷺ) perceived as if this had shocked his Companions, so he (ﷺ) told them to seek comfort through reciting: ‘Hasbunallah wa ni’mal-Wakil [Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)]”.

Riyad as-Salihin 409 At-Tirmidhi, who classified it as Hadith Hasan

Prophet Ibrahim (AS) declared, “Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs” when he was thrown into the fire.

This was because he had called his people to worship Allah alone, without associating partners with Him, but they refused and remained obstinate in their disbelief.

In response, Ibrahim (AS) smashed their idols, leaving the largest one intact. When they discovered the destruction, they sought revenge and decided to burn Ibrahim (AS) alive to support their idols.

As they kindled a massive fire and threw Ibrahim (AS) into it, he uttered the powerful statement, “Hasbunallahu wani’ma al-Wakeel” (Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs).

What followed was a miraculous intervention from Allah, who commanded the fire to be cool and safe for Ibrahim (AS).

The fire, which was initially hot, scorching, and destructive, became cool and safe, demonstrating Allah’s power and protection.

Similarly, the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and his companions, while returning from the Battle of Uhud, were informed that people had gathered against them, planning to invade Madinah and exterminate them.

Yet, they responded with confidence, saying, “Hasbunallahu wan’ma al-Wakeel” (Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs). Allah protected them from harm and guided them to follow His pleasure, bestowing upon them grace and bounty.

This statement, “Hasbunallahu wan’ma al-Wakeel,” is a powerful reminder for anyone facing hostility or transgression from others.
