“Allahumma jannibna shaitan” is a prayer you can say before being intimate with your spouse. When you and your spouse come together in this way, one of your important goals is to have children who are righteous and good.

So, it’s important for you to ask Allah to protect your future children from the influence of Satan.

By reciting this dua, you’re asking Allah to keep Satan away from your family and to bless you with righteous offspring. It’s a way for you to seek Allah’s guidance and protection as you start a family together.

Hadith Text

Narrated Ibn `Abbas: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “If anyone of you, when intending to have a sêxuâl intercourse with his wife, says:

‘Bismillah, Allahumma jannibna-sh-shaitan, wa jannibi-sh-shaitan ma razaqtana,’ and if the couple are destined to have a child (out of that very relation), then Satan will never be able to harm that child.”

[Al-Bukhari 3271, Muslim 1434, Abu Dawood 2161, at-Tirmidhi 1092]
Allahumma Jannibna Shaitaan

Scholars have different opinions about the meaning of the last part of the Hadith. Some say it means that Satan won’t harm the child in their faith.

Others believe it means Satan won’t harm the child’s body, while some think it means the child won’t become a disbeliever.

There’s also the view that it means the child will grow up to be righteous. All these ideas are valid because the Hadith is general. What’s important to understand is that this dua helps the child to become a good person and follow the right path.

Ibn Hajar al-Haytami -may Allah have mercy upon him-said: “The husband should be eager to recall this dua sincerely in his heart during the height of desire for it has a clear effect on the righteousness of the child.” [Tuhfatul-Muhtaaj (7/217)]

The question arises: how can we reconcile the fact that some parents recited this dua during intimacy yet their children grow up to become evil doers?

The answer: Shaikh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy upon him) explained that this dua is a means to a child’s righteousness; however, there can be preventatives that prevent this means from actualizing. Hence, the dua is an effective means to benefit a child provided that no preventatives are present.

At the end of the day, everything happens in accordance to the decree of Allah [See: Sharh Zaad al-Mustaqni-Kitaab an-Nikaah-Tape 12-Side A]
