Hadith Text

On the authority of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “A screen will be placed between the eyes of the jinn and the ‘awrah of the sons of Adam when one of them enters the toilet, if he says ‘Bismillah (in the name of Allah).”

[Sunan al-Tirmidh 606]

On the authority of Anas (رضي الله عنه): “Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) (intended) to enter Al-kha-la (An empty place, used to answer the call of nature, i.e., the bathroom)” he would say: “Allahum-ma In-nee A’oo-dhu Bi-ka mi-nal khu-bu-thi wal-kha-ba-ith.”

[Al-Bukhari no. 142 and Muslim, no. 375]

On the authority of Zayd ibn Arqam (رضي الله عنه) that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “These toilets are visited (by jinn), so when any one of you goes to the toilet, let him say, ‘Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min al-khubthi wa’l-khabaa’ith (O Allah, I seek refuge with You from evil and from the male and female devils).”

[Abu Dawood 6 and Ibn Maajah 296]
Allahumma Inni Auzu Bika Minal Khubsi Wal Khabais

When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said “Bismillah,” it means he was saying, “In the Name of Allah,” as he entered the bathroom.

This is to seek Allah’s blessings and protection, so that every good thing comes from it and every harm is kept away.

When he said “Allāhumma inni a’udhu bika,” it means he was calling upon Allah, seeking His protection, refuge, and shelter. He was turning to the One who has power over everything for help and safety.

The words “minal khubuthi wal-khabāith” refer to evil spirits, both male and female, which can cause harm.

These spirits are sometimes called devils. The bathroom is considered one of the places where these evil spirits might dwell.

In one narration by Bukhari, it’s mentioned that this supplication should be said before entering the bathroom, not after entering.

This shows the importance of seeking Allah’s protection before engaging in any activity, even something as routine as using the bathroom.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“The benefit of saying Bismillah is that it conceals a person. The benefit of seeking refuge with Allah is that one is turning to Allah from evil and from the male and female devils, for this place is filthy (khabeeth) and a filthy place is the abode of those who are evil (khubatha’).

So it is the abode of the devils. Thus it is appropriate if one wants to enter the toilet to say “A’udhu Billaah min al-khubthi wa’l-khabaa’ith (I seek refuge with Allah from evil and from the male and female devils)” so that he will not be harmed by evil or by the evil”
