Ya Muqallibal Qulub Dua Hadith

Shahr bin Hawshab RA said: “I said to Umm Salamah RA ‘O Mother of the Believers! What was the supplication that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said most frequently when he was with you?”

She said: ‘The supplication he said most frequently was: Yā Muqallibal-qulūb, thabbit qalbī alā dīnik. She said: ‘So I said: “O Messenger of Allah, why do you supplicate so frequently: ‘O Changer of the hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.’

He said: ‘O Umm Salamah! Verily, there is no human being except that his heart is between Two Fingers of the Fingers of Allah, so whomsoever He wills He makes steadfast, and whomever He wills He causes to deviate.’”

Commentary

“The verb ‘qallaba’ implies constant movement, turning, and change, reflecting the heart’s inherent instability. The noun ‘qulub’ refers to the plural of ‘qalb,’ meaning heart, which is always in flux.

While a person with strong faith can settle their heart, it requires continuous effort, as the heart naturally tends to wander.

The scholars note that the companions of the Prophet took time to internalize their faith, understanding the heart’s inconsistency.

They approached their faith gradually, like Ibn Mas’ud, who would memorize and apply ten verses of the Quran before moving on to the next.

This gradual approach is crucial, as excessive zeal can lead to extremism, causing faith to evaporate like boiling water.

Instead, one should strive for consistency, recognizing that faith grows gradually. The Prophet’s frequent supplication, ‘O Turner of Hearts, make my heart firm on Your path, serves as a reminder to maintain our hearts on the righteous path, longing for Allah and shunning sin.

Given the Prophet’s frequent recitation of this dua, we should emulate his example, acknowledging our hearts’ vulnerability and seeking divine guidance to stay on course.”
