Dua For New Clothes Hadith
On the authority of Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri (رضي الله عنه) said: “When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) put on a new garment, he would mention it by name, whether it was a chemise or a turban, then he would say:
O Allah, praise is to You. You have clothed me. I ask You for its goodness and the goodness of what it has been made for, and I seek Your protection from the evil of it and the evil of what it has been made for.
[Recorded by Abu Dawood (4020, words as per this), Tirmidhi (1767). Graded Sahih by Albani in Ta’leeq on “Hidayatur Ruwat” (4:203, no. 4269)]
This Dua can be even said when wearing new shoes. Imam Nawawi (رحمه الله) wrote: “Chapter: what to say when wearing a new garment, shoe, or what resembles it” [Al-Adhkar pg. 29]
Shaykh Salih al-Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) explained:
- Everything that happens to us, good or bad, is according to Allah’s will.
- Allah provides us with food, drink, and clothes, and we should be grateful.
- If Allah wants, He can take away our money and resources, or give us things we can’t use.
- Allah says in the Quran (Surat al-Mulk, 67:30), “If your water disappeared, who would bring you flowing water?”
When you wear new clothes, say:
- “O Allah, praise be to You, You clothed me with this [shirt, trouser, etc.]”
- “I ask You for its good and the good it was made for”
- “I seek Your protection from its evil and the evil it was made for”
This is because clothes can also bring harm, like:
- Causing pride or tyranny
- Being a source of temptation or corruption
- Having hidden dangers like poisonous materials
So, remember to say the four sentences:
- Praise Allah for the clothes
- Ask for their good
- Seek protection from their evil
- Acknowledge their potential to lead to evil
When you wear new clothes, say a special prayer to:
- Protect yourself from evil eyes and envy
- Feel grateful for Allah’s blessings
- Stay happy and joyful, free from worries and sadness
This prayer helps you:
- Appreciate Allah’s gifts, like new clothes
- Ask for protection from harm, like germs or microbes
- Seek refuge from envy, evil eyes, and even jinn
By saying this prayer, you’re:
- Thanking Allah for your new clothes
- Asking Him to keep you safe from harm
- Showing gratitude for His blessings
Dua Upon Seeing Someone Wearing New Clothes
Abu Nadrah narrated that the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) used to say to a person who wore a new garment:
تُبْـلِي وَيُـخْلِفُ اللّهُ تَعَالَى
Transliteration
Tublee wa yukhliful-laahu ta’aala.
Meaning in English
May you live so long that your garment will wear out and Allah, the Exalted, will give you another garment in its place.
[Recorded by Abu Dawood (4020). Graded Sahih by Albani in Ta’leeq on “Hidayatur Ruwat” (4:203, no. 4269). Sahih Mawqoof (words of the Sahabi, not the Prophet ﷺ).]
This is an invocation that Allah (Ta’ala) will preserve the person long enough for his garment to wear out, and that Allah will give him better than it in return.

One may even say:
On the authority of Umm Khalid bint Khalid: “The Prophet (ﷺ) was given some clothes including a black Khamisa.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “To whom shall we give this to wear?” The people kept silent whereupon the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Fetch Um Khalid for me.” I (Um Khalid) was brought carried (as I was small girl at that time). The Prophet (ﷺ) took the Khamisa in his hands and made me wear it and said,
أَبْلِي وَأَخْلِقِي [أَبْلِ وَأَخْلِق]
Transliteration: Ablee wa akhliqi [For a Male: Abli wa akhliq]
Meaning in English: May you live so long that your dress will wear out and you will mend it many times.
[He (ﷺ) said this] twice. On the Khamisa there were some green or pale designs (The Prophet (ﷺ) saw these designs) and said, “O Um Khalid! This is Sanah.” (Sanah in a Ethiopian word meaning beautiful).”
[Recorded by Al-Bukhari 5823 & 5845, Abu Dawood 4024. Graded Sahih by Albani in Sahih Abi Dawood 4024]
One may even say:
On the authority of Ibn ʿUmar (رضي الله عنه) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saw ʿUmar (رضي الله عنه) wearing a white Qamīs and he said: “Is this garment of yours washed or a new one?” He said: “Rather it has been washed.” He said:
اِلْبَـسْ جَدِيـدًا، وعِشْ حَمِـيدًا، ومُتْ شَهِيدًا
Transliteration: ilbas jadeedan, wa’ish hameeda, wa mut shaheeda.
Meaning: May you wear new clothes, live praiseworthy and die a martyr.
[Recorded by Ibn Majah 3558. Authenticated by al-Albani in Sahiha 352 & Sahih al-Jami 1234; and graded Hasan by Ibn Hajar in Nataij al ifkar 1:138]
