Explanation of The Dua

This remarkable supplication comprises twenty-two heartfelt requests and pursuits, which are among the most significant aspirations of a servant of Allah.

These requests are the key to achieving righteousness, happiness, and felicity in both this life and the hereafter.

The first request, as taught by the Prophet (ﷺ), is: ‘My Lord, help me…’ This is a plea for divine assistance and support to:

  • Remember and be thankful to Allah
  • Worship Him with excellence
  • Overcome enemies and obstacles with His help

The second request is: ‘…and do not help anyone against me…’ This means: Do not let anyone, including one’s own lower self or evil forces, gain the upper hand and prevent obedience to Allah.

The third request is: ‘…and grant me victory…’ This is a plea for:

  • Triumph over disbelievers and enemies of Islam
  • Victory over one’s own lower self, which can be a formidable enemy

The fourth request is: ‘…and do not grant anyone victory over me…’ This means: Do not allow any creature to gain mastery over me.

The fifth request is: ‘…and make a plan on my behalf…’ This is a plea for:

  • Divine guidance and strategy to outwit enemies
  • Safety from their evil and protection from their traps

The sixth request, as taught by the Prophet (ﷺ), is: ‘…and do not make a plan (for my enemies) against me…‘ This means: Do not guide my enemies to a way of repelling me or thwarting my efforts.

The seventh request is: ‘…and guide me…’ This means:

  • Direct me to all forms of goodness and beneficial knowledge
  • Enable me to recognize my own flaws and shortcomings

The eighth request is: ‘…and make the guidance easy for me (to follow)…’ This means:

  • Make it easy for me to follow Your guidance and walk the path of righteousness
  • Provide me with the means to do good and make obedience to You a joy, not a burden

The ninth request is: ‘…and grant me victory over those who have wronged me…’ This means: Grant me victory over those who have oppressed and transgressed against me

As Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (Rahimahullah) explained, this request is not a plea for victory over enemies without exception, but rather a supplication for justice and victory over those who have wronged one. [ar-Radd ala-l Bakree’, 1/207]”

“The tenth request, as taught by the Prophet (ﷺ), is: ‘…O Allah, make me grateful to You…’ meaning: Inspire me to be thankful for Your blessings and favors upon me.

The eleventh request is: ‘…mindful of You…’ meaning: Constantly aware of You, in all situations and conditions, whether standing, sitting, or lying down.

The twelfth request is: ‘…in awe of You…’ meaning: In fear of You, both in times of prosperity and adversity.

The thirteenth request is: ‘…devoted to Your obedience…’ meaning: Dedicated to performing many acts of obedience, with willingness, compliance, and submission.

The fourteenth request is: ‘…humble and submissive to You…’ meaning: Make me submissive, humble, and obedient, with a heart that surrenders to Your Majesty.

The fifteenth request is: ‘…a humble supplicant to You, and ever turning to You in repentance…’ meaning:

  • Make me a frequent and humble supplicant, begging and crying before You, and constantly repenting and turning back to You in all my affairs.

The Prophet (ﷺ) emphasized the importance of combining humble supplication with repentance, as they are inseparable and intertwined.”

“The sixteenth request, as taught by the Prophet (ﷺ), is: ‘…My Lord, accept my repentance…’ meaning: Accept my repentance, making it valid and complete, with all its necessary conditions and etiquette fulfilled.

The seventeenth request is: ‘…and wash away my sins…’ meaning: Purify me by wiping away my sins and misdeeds.

The eighteenth request is: ‘…respond to my supplication…’ meaning: Answer my prayers and grant my needs.

The nineteenth request is: ‘…confirm my argument/evidence…‘ meaning: Support my argument and confirm my speech, both in this life and the next, against Your enemies and during my questioning in the grave.

The twentieth request is: ‘…guide my heart…‘ meaning: Guide my heart to knowledge of my Lord, the Truth, and the Guidance that Allah has commanded and sent the Messengers to teach.

The twenty-first request is: ‘…make my tongue truthful…‘ meaning: Make my tongue speak only the truth, with correctness and uprightness.
