It’s recommended to ask Allah for protection when entering the bathroom. This is because bathrooms are places where impurities are present, and evil spirits might be around. Here are the dua before entering toilet and leaving the bathroom.

Dua Before Entering Toilet Meaning in English

The dua means O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the male and female evil [unclean] spirits.

Hadith

On the authority of Anas (رضي الله عنه): “Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) (intended) to enter Al-kha-la (An empty place, used to answer the call of nature, i.e., the bathroom)” he would say: “Allahum-ma In-nee A’oo-dhu Bi-ka mi-nal khu-bu-thi wal-kha-ba-ith.”

[Al-Bukhari no. 142 and Muslim, no. 375]

Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

“These toilets are haunted (inhabited by devils), so when anyone of you goes to the toilet let him say, ‘A’udhu Billahi min al-khubthi wa’l-khabaith (I seek refuge with Allah from the male and female devils).”

(Narrated by Abu Dawud, 6; classed as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih Abi Dawud)

Why We Say Dua Before Using the Bathroom

Scholars explain that we say a special prayer before using the bathroom for two reasons:

  1. Bathrooms are dirty places where evil spirits (devils) are present.
  2. We shouldn’t say Allah’s name out loud in the bathroom, so we might forget to remember Him. This is when the devils try to harm us.

Saying “I seek refuge with Allah” before entering the bathroom helps protect us from the devils until we come out. This is because bathrooms are considered evil and unclean places where devils live.

So, every time we enter the bathroom, even if it’s just to clean or do something else, we should say the dua. This helps keep us safe from harm.

Dua For Leaving Toilet in Arabic

The dua for leaving toilet in Arabic is:

غُفْرَانَكَ

TransliterationGhufranaka

Ghufranaka Meaning

The meaning of ghufranaka in English is I ask You [O Allaah] for Your forgiveness.

Dua For Leaving Toilet

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) said “Ghufrānak” (I ask You, Allah, for forgiveness), he reminded us that only Allah can forgive our sins and shortcomings. No one else, not even prophets or saints, can grant forgiveness.

We seek forgiveness when leaving the bathroom because we haven’t fully thanked Allah for the blessings of:

  1. Food and drink
  2. Digestion
  3. Nutrition distribution
  4. Easy waste removal

We realize we’ve fallen short in showing gratitude, so we ask Allah’s forgiveness.

Scholars say we also seek forgiveness for not remembering Allah while in the bathroom, which is a shortcoming. We make up for it by asking for forgiveness.

In Islam, there are specific rules (etiquettes) for using the bathroom, taught by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). These rules are part of good hygiene and manners.

Toilet Etiquettes in Islam

Here are some basic rules to follow when using the bathroom in Islam:

  1. Enter with your right foot and say “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah).
  2. Leave with your left foot and say “Ghufranak” (I seek Your forgiveness).
  3. Keep yourself covered and private.
  4. Clean yourself thoroughly with water and/or toilet paper. Islam prefers water for cleansing.
  5. Don’t face or turn your back towards the Qiblah (the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca).
  6. Be quiet and focused, avoiding unnecessary talk or actions.
  7. Use your left hand for cleaning, as the right hand is for clean activities like eating and greeting.
  8. Say “Ghufranak” again and thank Allah when leaving the bathroom.
  9. Avoid using bad language or wasting water, as these are discouraged in Islam.
