Meaning: O my Lord expand me my breast, and ease my task for me, and untie the knot from my tongue, so they may understand what I say.

[The dua is found Surah Ta-Ha verse 25-28]

“Musa (Moses) prayed to Allah, saying:

“O my Lord, please:

  • Give me confidence and courage (open my chest)
  • Make my task easier
  • Help me speak clearly (loosen the knot from my tongue)

Musa was asking for Allah’s help because he had a big task ahead.

He was sent to confront the powerful and arrogant King Fir’awn (Pharaoh), who didn’t believe in Allah and thought he was the only god. Musa had lived in Fir’awn’s palace as a child, but then he had to flee after killing an Egyptian.

Now, he was sent back to warn Fir’awn and his people to worship only Allah.

Musa had a speech impediment, a lisp, from an accident when he was a child. He didn’t ask Allah to completely remove the lisp, but only to help him speak clearly enough to deliver his message.

The prophets only ask for what they need to do their job. That’s why Musa still had a slight speech problem, and Fir’awn even made fun of him for it, saying he couldn’t speak clearly.

This dua asks Allah to:

  1. Give you confidence and courage (expand my breast)
  2. Make your tasks easy (ease my task)
  3. Help you speak clearly and correctly (untie the knot from my tongue)
  4. Allow others to understand what you’re saying (so they may understand what I say)

It’s asking Allah to help you speak well, be understood, and feel confident when communicating with others.
