Tabbat Yada Surah in English, Arabic Text and Transliteration

Tabbat Yada Surah

Surah Al-Masad (Tabbat yada surah) is the 111th chapter of the Quran and has only 5 verses. It talks about Abu Lahab, the Prophet’s uncle, and his wife who didn’t believe in Islam and were mean to the Prophet.

The surah says that they will face consequences for not believing and for being against the Prophet. It reminds us that those who oppose the truth will face divine justice.

Even though it’s a short surah, it has a strong message: not believing in God’s message can lead to serious consequences, and it’s important to follow God’s guidance.

Tabbat Yada

Abu Lahab, the Prophet’s uncle, was very mean to the Prophet and didn’t care about God or family ties. May God punish him.

God criticized Abu Lahab strongly, which will bring him shame forever. God says:

  • May Abu Lahab be unhappy and lose everything
  • His wealth and gains won’t save him from God’s punishment
  • He and his wife will burn in a fiery hell

His wife was also very mean to the Prophet and worked with her husband to do evil things. She planned to harm the Prophet and carried a heavy load of sins, like carrying firewood.

This surah is a remarkable sign from God, as it predicted Abu Lahab’s punishment before he even died. And everything happened just as God said it would.

Surah Al-Masad criticizes Abu Lahab, the Prophet’s uncle, for being very against Islam. The Surah says that his wealth and gains won’t save him from God’s punishment.

Abu Lahab and his wife were mean to the Prophet and tried to stop him. The Surah says they will be punished in a fiery hell.

This Surah was revealed before Abu Lahab and his wife died, but everything happened just as God said it would. This shows that God knows everything, even things we can’t see.

Hadith About Abu Lahb

Narrated Ibn Abbas: When the Verse:–‘And warn your tribe of near-kindred, was revealed, the Prophet (ﷺ) ascended the Safa (mountain) and started calling, “O Bani Fihr! O BaniAdi!” addressing various tribes of Quraish till they were assembled.

Those who could not come themselves, sent their messengers to see what was there. Abu Lahab and other people from Quraish came and the Prophet (ﷺ) then said, “Suppose I told you that there is an (enemy) cavalry in the valley intending to attack you, would you believe me?”

They said, “Yes, for we have not found you telling anything other than the truth.” He then said, “I am a warner to you in face of a terrific punishment.”

Abu Lahab said (to the Prophet) “May your hands perish all this day. Is it for this purpose you have gathered us?” Then it was revealed: “Perish the hands of Abu Lahab (one of the Prophet’s uncles), and perish he! His wealth and his children will not profit him….” (111.1-5)

Sahih al-Bukhari 4770

Surah Al-Masad is the only place in the Quran where a specific person, Abu Lahab, is named as an enemy of Islam. He was the Prophet’s uncle, but he strongly opposed him, even throwing a stone at him.

This was unusual because in Arabian society, family support was important, and most of the Prophet’s relatives supported him.

Abu Lahab’s wife, Umm Jamil, shared his hatred for the Prophet. When Surah Al-Masad was revealed, condemning them, she got angry and tried to hurt the Prophet. But he wasn’t there, and she ended up accusing him wrongly.

The surah calls her “carrier of the wood” because she used to put thorns at the Prophet’s door. It also says that in Hell, she will wear a humble rope around her neck, instead of her proud jewelry.

The word “masad” means a strong rope, made from palm fibers or other materials. It’s a symbol of her punishment.
