Commentary

In Surah Al Imran, verse 8, Allah reveals a supplication made by the Rāsikhoona (those firmly grounded) in knowledge. They pray: “Our Lord! Let not our hearts deviate (from the truth) after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You. Truly, You are al-Wahhab (the One Who Gives Freely).”

Imam at-Tabaree explains that the Rāsikhoona are acknowledging their belief in all verses of the Quran, both the Mutashābih (not entirely clear) and the Muhkam (entirely clear).

They seek refuge with Allah, asking Him to protect them from the trial of deviating from the truth, like those who misinterpret the Quran’s unclear verses to suit their own desires. These individuals seek to misguide others and stray from the righteous path.

The Rāsikhoona implore Allah to spare them from such deviation, asking Him to keep their hearts firm on the truth. They recognize that only Allah truly understands the interpretation of the Quran’s unclear verses.

By reciting this dua, the believers seek Allah’s mercy, guidance, and protection from straying away from the path of righteousness.

When the Rāsikhoona (those firmly grounded) in knowledge say, “Let not our hearts deviate (from the truth),” they mean: “O Allah, do not allow our hearts to stray from the right guidance You have shown us.” They ask Allah to keep their hearts firm on the truth, preventing them from turning away from His guidance.

The phrase “After You have guided us” refers to Allah’s guidance to the truth, and the believers seek success in achieving true faith in both the clear and unclear verses of the Quran.

By saying, “And grant us mercy from You,” they ask Allah for His mercy, which includes the ability to remain firm and steadfast in their faith, confirming the truth of the Quran and the Prophets.

The phrase “Truly, You are al-Wahhab (the One Who Gives Freely)” highlights Allah’s generosity in granting success and correctness to His worshippers, enabling them to remain firm on the right path and confirm the truth of His Book and Messengers.

These supplications are indeed magnificent and blessed, showcasing the believers’ humility, gratitude, and desire to remain steadfast on the path of righteousness.
