This surah was revealed in Makkah and has only 4 short verses. It talks about the safe trade routes that the Quraish tribe had with their neighbors, allowing them to travel and trade goods.
Every year, they would:
- Travel to Yemen in the winter to buy spices and other goods from India and beyond
- Take these goods to Syria in the summer to sell and bring back other trading goods
Allah reminds them to be thankful for His blessings, including:
- Safety from fear and harm
- Food to eat when they were hungry
Allah asks them to worship Him alone and be grateful for His favors.
Allah’s Blessings to Quraysh
Allah bestowed countless blessings upon the Quraysh tribe. One of the greatest blessings was the safety they enjoyed while traveling for trade, in addition to the security of living in the sanctuary of Makkah.
Commentators believe this surah is connected to the previous one, highlighting how Allah protected Quraysh from harm, specifically the army of the elephant, to:
- Keep them safe
- Guard their interests
- Secure their trade journeys to Yemen and Syria
Allah destroyed those who intended harm and increased respect for the Quraysh and the Haram (sanctuary) in the hearts of the Arabs, allowing them to travel safely.
In gratitude, Allah commands them to worship Him alone, saying:
- Worship the Lord of this House (the Kaaba)
- Acknowledge His oneness and devote worship sincerely to Him
- Give thanks for His blessings, including:
- Plenty of food to eat
- Security and protection from fear
These worldly blessings require gratitude to Allah. The surah honors the Kaaba by specifically mentioning Allah as its Lord, although He is the Lord of all things.
