Surah Al-‘Alaq: The First Revelation

Surah Al-‘Alaq, the 96th chapter of the Quran, holds a special significance as the first revelation received by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

This surah marks the beginning of his prophethood and emphasizes the importance of knowledge, learning, and guidance from Allah.

The surah commences with the command “Recite in the name of your Lord,” urging the Prophet to share the message with others.

It highlights Allah’s creation of man and His care for him, which includes sending prophets and revealing books to guide humanity.

The surah praises Allah’s generosity and kindness, citing His teaching of the pen, which enables the preservation of knowledge and facilitates communication.

However, it also warns against man’s tendency to forget his dependence on Allah and transgress against His guidance.

The surah addresses those who reject guidance and discourage others from praying, warning them of punishment and urging them to fear Allah’s wrath.

In contrast, it encourages believers to prostrate before Allah, draw near to Him through worship, and seek His pleasure.

Originally revealed concerning Abu Jahl’s attempts to disturb the Prophet’s prayer, this surah’s message remains universally relevant, cautioning against discouraging others from acts of worship and emphasizing the importance of seeking guidance from Allah.
