Wajjahtu Wajhiya Dua in Arabic

Muslim (771) narrated a hadith which includes some of the du’a’s that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to recite in his prayer.

It was narrated from ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up to pray, he would say:

Wajjahtu Wajhiya Dua Meaning in English

I have set my face towards the Originator of the heavens and the earth sincerely [in Islam], and I am not among the Mushrikeen. Indeed, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, no partner has He. With this I have been commanded and I am the first of the Muslims (those who submit to Him). O Allah, you are the King and there is no god but You. You are my Lord and I am Your slave. I have wronged myself, and have acknowledged my sins, so forgive all my sins, for no one forgives sins except You. Guide me to the best of attitudes, to which no one can guide except You, and save me from the worst of attitudes, from which no-one can save except You. I am here and happy to serve you. All good is in Your Hands, and evil is not from You. There is no escape or shelter from You except with You. Blessed are You and exalted. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You.

Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said:

“I am free from all false gods you worship besides Allah. I have turned my heart to the One Who created the heavens and the earth.”

Ibrahim was telling his people that he only worshiped the true God, the Creator of everything. He was saying:

  • I don’t worship idols or images like you do.
  • I don’t think angels or planets can help me, only Allah can.
  • I know Venus, the Moon, and the Sun are just objects in the sky, they can’t be gods.
  • They move and change, they can’t even control themselves, so how can they be gods?

Ibrahim was debating with his people, explaining that only Allah is worthy of worship. He said:

  • If your gods are real, then come and try to harm me.
  • But I know only Allah is the true God, the Creator and Lord of all things.

This is a powerful statement of faith and trust in Allah. Ibrahim was saying he only worshiped the One True God, and he was not afraid of his people’s false gods.
