The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught his companions how to send blessings upon him, as narrated in various Hadiths.
When asked about the proper way to send Salah upon him, the Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, “Say:
‘O Allah, send Your Salah upon Muhammad and his family, just as You sent Your Salah upon the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are the Most Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad and his family, just as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are Most Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.’
This invocation is a powerful way to show reverence and respect for the Prophet, and to seek Allah’s mercy and blessings upon him and his family.

The Virtue of Saying Salah upon the Prophet
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught his companions the importance of sending blessings upon him before making supplications.
Imam Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and At-Tirmidhi reported a Sahih Hadith where the Prophet (peace be upon him) instructed a man who failed to praise Allah and send Salah upon him before supplicating,
“When you supplicate, start by praising and glorifying Allah, then send Salah upon the Prophet, and after that, make your supplication as you wish.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also encouraged his companions to send abundant Salah upon him. In a Hasan Hadith, Ubayy bin Ka`b asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) how much of his prayer should be dedicated to sending Salah upon him.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied, “Whatever you want, but if you increase it, it will be better for you.”
When asked if he should dedicate his entire prayer to sending Salah upon him, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “This would be sufficient to relieve your distress and earn you forgiveness of your sins.”
The rewards for sending Salah upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) are numerous. Imam Ahmad recorded a Hadith where the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “No member of my Ummah sends Salah upon me but Allah sends Salah upon him tenfold.”
Similarly, Muslim, Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi, and An-Nasa’i recorded a Hadith where the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever sends one Salah upon me, Allah will send ten upon him.”
The Prophet (peace be upon him) also encouraged his companions to ask Allah to grant him Al-Wasilah, a position in the highest part of Paradise.
He said, “Send Salah upon me, for this is Zakah for you, and ask Allah to grant me Al-Wasilah.”
Finally, the Prophet (peace be upon him) warned against failing to send Salah upon him, saying, “The miser is the one in whose presence I am mentioned, then he does not send Salah upon me.”
Occasions for Sending Salah upon the Prophet
We should send blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him) on various occasions, including:
- After the call to prayer (Adhan), as reported by Imam Ahmad from Abdullah bin Amr bin Al-As.
- When entering or exiting the Masjid, as reported by Imam Ahmad from Fatima, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah.
- During the Funeral prayer, after the first Takbir, and before making supplications for the deceased.
- At the conclusion of supplications, as reported by At-Tirmidhi and Razin bin Mu`awiyah.
- In the Qunut supplication, as reported by Ahmad, the Sunan compilers, Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban, and Al-Hakim.
- On Fridays and the eve of Fridays, as reported by Imam Ahmad from Aws bin Aws Ath-Thaqafi.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged us to send abundant Salah upon him, promising that Allah will send Salah upon us tenfold.
He also taught us to ask Allah to grant him Al-Wasilah, a status in Paradise. By sending Salah upon him, we can ensure our supplications are answered, and we will be entitled to his intercession on the Day of Judgement.
