Fourth Kalima Meaning in English

There is none worthy of worship except Allah. He is alone and has no partner. To Him belongs the Kingdom and for Him is all praise. He gives life and causes death. In His hand is all good and He has power over everything.

Explanation of the Fourth Kalima

The Kalima Tawheed is a beautiful declaration of Allah’s absolute oneness and power. Let’s break down its meaning:

  1. “Lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu” (There is no god but Allah. He is One; He has no partner): This part asserts the oneness of Allah, confirming that no one shares His divinity, and He has no partners or equals.
  2. “Lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-ḥamdu” (His is the kingdom, and His is the praise): Allah is the owner of everything in the heavens and earth. All sovereignty belongs to Him, and all praise is due to Him for His countless blessings.
  3. “Yuḥyi wa yumītu” (He gives life and causes death): Allah is the one who gives life and takes it away. Life and death are in His control.
  4. “Wa huwa ḥayyullā yamūtu abadan abada” (He is alive and will never die, forever and ever): Unlike His creation, Allah is eternal. He was never born, and He will never die. His existence is eternal and beyond time.
  5. “Dhū-l-jalāli wa-l-ikrām” (Possessing majesty and honor): Allah is majestic and honored beyond any limits. His attributes are perfect, and He is worthy of all reverence and respect.
  6. “Bi yadihi-l-khayr” (In His hand is all good): All goodness comes from Allah, and He alone can grant it.
  7. “Wa huwa ʿalā kulli shay’in qadīr” (And He has power over everything): Allah’s power is absolute, and nothing is beyond His control. He can do whatever He wills.

It is important to clarify that the exact words of the Fourth Kalima, as commonly recited, are not found in any sound Hadith, nor are they from the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a singular form. Rather, these words have been collected from various authentic Hadith and compiled into one formula.

While the Fourth Kalima beautifully expresses the belief in Allah’s oneness and majesty, it should be kept in mind that it is not Sunnah to recite it as a specific form of zikr (remembrance of Allah). The Prophet (peace be upon him) has taught us many authentic duas and forms of zikr that have clear foundations in the Sunnah.

Therefore, it is preferable to focus on reciting those sound duas and zikrs, as they carry the blessing of being directly from the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

The short and authentic form of this kalma is:

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ، وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ‏

The transliteration of this dua is La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ala kulli shay in qadeer.

It means “There is none worthy of worship except Allah, and He is alone, He has no partner, to Him belongs the supreme authority and praise and He is able to do all things”.

La Ilaha Illallah Wahdahu La Sharika Lah

This dhikr has a great meaning, and every believer must contemplate its meaning:

He is One and He has no partner with Him means He has no partner in His divinity, nor in His Lordship, nor in His Names, nor in His Attributes, nor in His Actions. He is the rich, strong, who does not need a partner.

He is the Sovereignty means That is, greatly blessed is Allah to whom belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth. Similarly, all that is between them is also under His ownership and control.

To Him also belongs the knowledge of the last Hour, when all of these have served their purpose and the time for them to perish has arrived. Ultimately, everything will be brought back to Him.

His is the Praise, Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. The Beneficent, the Merciful. Master of the Day of Judgement.

He is Omnipotent over all things: He is All-Powerful.

Hadith Texts

There are several hadiths which state the virtue of saying this great zikr among them is;

  1. Hadith

Narrated Abu Ayyash: The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: If anyone says in the morning: “There is no god but Allah alone Who has no partner; to Him belong the dominions, to Him praise is due, and He is Omnipotent,” he will have a reward equivalent to that for setting free a slave from among the descendants of Isma’il.

He will have ten good deeds recorded for him, ten evil deeds deducted from him, he will be advanced ten degrees, and will be guarded from the Devil till the evening. If he says them in the evening, he will have a similar recompense till the morning.

The version of Hammad says: A man saw the Messenger of Allah (SAW) in a dream and said: Messenger of Allah! AbuAyyash is relating such and such on your authority. He said: Abu Ayyash has spoken the truth.

Sunan Abi Dawud 5077
  1. Laa Ilaha Illallah Wahdahu La Sharika Lahu Lahul Mulku 100 Times Hadith

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said, “If one says one-hundred times in one day: “None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, the Alone Who has no partners, to Him belongs Dominion and to Him belong all the Praises, and He has power over all things (i.e. Omnipotent)”,

one will get the reward of manumitting ten slaves, and one-hundred good deeds will be written in his account, and one-hundred bad deeds will be wiped off or erased from his account, and on that day he will be protected from the morning till evening from Satan, and nobody will be superior to him except one who has done more than that which he has done.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 3293

Another narration regarding the same adhkar:

  1. Hadith

Amr bin Shuaib narrated from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “The best of supplication is the supplication of the Day of Arafah.

And the best of what I and the Prophets before me have said is: None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, Alone, without partner, to Him belongs all that exists, and to Him belongs the Praise, and He is powerful over all things. (Lā ilāha illallāh, waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamdu, wa huwa `alā kulli shai’in qadīr).’”

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (3585).

Benefits

He who utters Laa ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu laa shareekallah, lahul-Mulk, walahul-hamd wahuwa ‘alaa kulli shay-in Qadeer hundred times (100 times) in a day, will attain these five benefits:

  • Firstly, a reward equivalent to that of emancipating ten slaves;
  • Secondly, a hundred good deeds will be recorded to his credit;
  • Thirdly, a hundred of his sins will be blotted out from his scroll;
  • Fourthly, he will be safeguarded against the devil; and
  • Fifthly, no one will exceed him in doing more excellent good deeds except someone who did more than what he has done.

You will earn these five virtues if you say, Laa ilaaha illallaahu wahdahu laa shareekallah, lahul-Mulk, walahu l-hamd wahuwa ‘alaa kulli shay-in Qadeer, a hundred times.

And this is very easy. It is one of the Morning And Evening Duas, you may repeat it while awaiting the Fajr prayer after reaching the mosque or after dawn, you will get benefit from it.

This is also one of the matter a person is required to do frequently. It is good to say it in the first part of the day in order to safeguard himself from the Devil.
