Fifth Kalma Meaning in English

The meaning of the fifth kalima is,“I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, from every sin I committed knowingly or unknowingly, secretly or openly, and I turn towards Him from the sin that I know and from the sin that I do not know. Certainly You, You (are) the knower of the hidden things and the Concealer (of) the mistakes and the Forgiver (of) the sins. And (there is) no power and no strength except from Allah, the Most High, the Most Great.”

Explanation of the Fifth Kalima

  1. “Astaghfirullāha rabbī min kulli dhanbin” (I seek forgiveness from Allah, my Lord, for every sin): This part acknowledges our sins, both known and unknown, and expresses a sincere plea for Allah’s forgiveness.
  2. “Adhnabtuhu ʿamadan aw khaṭa’an sirran aw ʿalāniyatan” (Committed knowingly or unknowingly, secretly or openly): We seek forgiveness for sins committed intentionally or unintentionally, whether in private or in public. This covers all possible ways we may have wronged ourselves or others.
  3. “Wa atūbu ilayhi min adh-dhanbi alladhī aʿlamu wa min adh-dhanbi alladhī lā aʿlamu” (And I turn to Him in repentance from the sin that I know and the sin that I do not know): We repent not only for the sins we are aware of but also for those we may have committed without realizing.
  4. “Innaka anta ʿallāmu-l-ghuyūbi wa sattāru-l-ʿuyūbi wa ghaffāru-dh-dhunūbi” (Truly, You are the Knower of the unseen, the Concealer of faults, and the Forgiver of sins): This part praises Allah’s attributes, recognizing that He knows everything, covers our faults, and forgives our sins.
  5. “Wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāhil-ʿaliyyil-ʿaẓīm” (There is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Great): We acknowledge our helplessness and reliance on Allah for guidance, strength, and forgiveness.

Supplications in Islam: Narrated and Non-Narrated

According to IslamQA, you can offer supplications that aren’t narrated in reports, even in colloquial Arabic or another language, as long as:

  • You use permissible words
  • Avoid transgressing limits
  • Don’t involve sin or sever ties of kinship

While narrated supplications have merit, you may need to ask for specific blessings or protection. This type of supplication is flexible and doesn’t require strict adherence to narrated reports.

Remember, focus, presence of mind, and sincerity matter most in supplication. Allah hears all voices and understands all languages.

Differentiate between:

  • Restricted supplications (connected to specific times, places, or acts of worship)
  • General supplications (asking for needs and wants)

For restricted supplications, stick to narrated reports. For general supplications, use acceptable and correct words according to Shariah. Avoid transgression and sin.

Seeking Forgiveness with Noble Expressions

Using beautiful names, especially “Allah”, and sincere intentions, we repent and seek forgiveness. The statement “And I repent to Him” confirms our determination to turn to Allah, emphasizing sincerity in both heart and action.

Remember, sincere utterance of these words brings the great reward of forgiveness from the Forgiving, the Merciful.
