Dua Waking Up

Meaning

None has the right to be worshipped except Allah, alone without associate, to Him belongs sovereignty and praise and He is over all things wholly capable. How perfect Allah is, and all praise is for Allah, and none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, Allah is the greatest and there is no power nor might except with Allah, The Most High, The Supreme. O my Lord forgive me.

Whoever says this will be forgiven, and if he supplicates Allah, his prayer will be answered. If he performs ablution and prays, his prayer will be accepted. Sahih al-Bukhari 1154

Ibn Abbas, a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), shared a beautiful story. One night, he stayed at his aunt Maimuna’s house, who was also the Prophet’s wife.

Ibn Abbas pretended to sleep, but when the Prophet woke up in the middle of the night, he saw the Prophet looking up at the heavens and reciting the last 10 verses of Surat Al-Imran (Chapter 3).

These verses are a confirmed Sunnah (tradition) to recite at night, and they:

  • Strengthen our belief in Allah
  • Encourage remembering Allah
  • Highlight the virtues of good deeds and rewards for both men and women
  • Emphasize the reward of Paradise for those who do good deeds with faith
  • Mention the reward of people from other faiths who accepted Islam, like Najashi of Abyssinia and Abdullah Salam, a former Jewish rabbi

The verses conclude by urging believers to:

  • Be patient and steadfast
  • Protect the Muslim community from enemies
  • Guard the faith to achieve success

Reciting these verses at night can bring us closer to Allah and guide us on the right path.
