There are 15 special verses in the Quran that require us to bow down (perform sujood) when we read or hear them. These verses describe how Allah’s servants and creation bow down to their Lord.
When one of these verses is read (like Surah Alaq 19 or Surah Najm 62), both the reader and listener bow down. If you’re sitting, you can bow down directly from your seat. If you’re standing, like during prayer, you’ll bow down from there. Then, you’ll continue with your prayer as usual.
In printed copies of the Quran, these special verses are often marked with a line above the text and the word “sajdah” in the margin, so you know to bow down.

on the floor.

Remember to be sincere and focused on your worship during Sajdah.
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited the Quran in large gatherings, he would prostrate when he came across a verse that required sujood. The whole gathering would follow him. If some people didn’t have space to prostrate, they would prostrate on the backs of others.
Conditions for Sujood at-Tilaawah:
- Be in a state of ritual purity
- Face the qiblah (direction of the Kaaba)
- Prostrate as you would in prayer
The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that when we prostrate, seven parts of our body should touch the ground:
- Face
- Palms
- Knees
- Feet
He also instructed us to:
- Place our palms on the ground and raise our elbows
- Not spread our forearms like a dog
- Make sure our nose touches the ground as much as our forehead
- Relax our bones in their proper places
When prostrating, the Prophet (peace be upon him) would support himself on his palms, keep his fingers together, and point them towards the qiblah. He would prostrate on seven limbs, as ordered by Allah.”
