‘We were with the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) and some rain fell on us, so the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) uncovered some of his garment so that some rain could fall on him.
We said: O Messenger of Allaah why did you do that? Because it has recently descended from its Lord.’
[Collected by Muslim (898)]
Seeking Forgiveness is a means to getting Rain. Umar RA went out to make istisqa’ and he did no more than seeking Allah’s forgiveness.
The people said: ‘We did not see you making istisqa’.’ He said: ‘I sought rain by what makes it descend (i.e., istighfar/ seeking forgiveness of Allah), unlike those (Arabs of days of ignorance) who sought it by the stars of the sky.’
Then, he recited the following two ‘ayat (verses):
Ask Forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and Increase you in strength [added] to your strength. [Quran 11: 52]
And said, ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He Is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers. And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers. [Quran 71: 10- 12]
