Sa’d reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The supplication of Yunus when he called upon Allah inside the belly of the whale was this, ‘There is no God but you, glory be to you, for I have been among the wrongdoers,’. Verily, a Muslim never supplicates for anything with it but that Allah will answer him.”

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, ‘The invocation of my brother Dhun-Noon: None has the right to be worshipped save You; glory be to You, I have been among the wrongdoers. Prophet Yoonus (Jonah), son of Matta, was a messenger of Allah who was sent to his people to guide them to worship Allah alone and abandon their sinful ways. Despite his tireless efforts, only a few believed in him.
In despair, Yoonus supplicated to Allah to punish his people, but was instead commanded to preach to them for 40 more days.
When they still refused to believe, he warned them of impending punishment, and they repented only when they saw him depart. Allah forgave them, showing His mercy.
Meanwhile, Yoonus boarded a ship that encountered a storm. The mariners cast lots to determine who was responsible for the evil that had befallen them, and Yoonus was selected three times.
Reluctantly, they threw him overboard, where he was swallowed by a huge whale. In the darkness, he cried out, “La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz zalimin” (There is no deity except You, glorified be You! Indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers).
Allah rescued him, and Yoonus returned to his people, who welcomed him with open arms.
