أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ
Transliteration
The Dua is transliterated as A’udhu bikalimaatil-laahit-taammaati min sharri maa khalaq.

Abu Hurairah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “Whoever says three times when he reaches the evening: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of that which He has created.– he will not be harmed by any Humatun (sting or bite of a poisonous creature) during that night.”
(One of the narrators) Suhail said: “So our family used to learn it and they used to say it every night. A girl among them was stung, and she did not feel any pain.”

Khaula bint Hakim Sulamiyya reported: I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: When any one of you stays at a place, he should say:” I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of Allah from the evil of that He created.”
Nothing would then do him any harm until he moves from that place. Abu Huraira reported that a person came to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and said: “Allah’s Messenger, I was stung by a scorpion during the night.
Thereupon he said: Had you recited these words in the evening:” I seek refuge in the Perfect Word of Allah from the evil of what He created,” it would not have done any harm to you.

Commentary
Al-Humah refers to the venomous sting or bite of creatures like scorpions and similar harmful animals. A hadith narrated by Suhail ibn Abi Salih in at-Tirmidhee highlights the effectiveness of a specific supplication against such harm.

According to the hadith, Suhail’s family members recited this dua every evening, and when one of the young girls was stung, she felt no pain or harm.
This anecdote demonstrates the excellence of this supplication and its potential to protect the reciter from snake or scorpion bites, or similar harm, by Allah’s permission.
The Prophet’s phrase “I seek refuge” means to seek shelter and protection from something feared, fleeing to a guardian who can defend and protect from harm.
When we seek refuge in Allah, we flee from harm and turn to Him for safety, clinging to Him and seeking shelter in His protection.
“When the Prophet (ﷺ) says ‘the Words of Allah’, he refers to the Noble Qur’an or the divine decrees that govern the universe.
‘Perfect Words’ means that Allah’s words are complete, flawless, and devoid of any deficiencies or shortcomings found in human speech.
The Prophet’s (ﷺ) phrase ‘from the evil that comes from what He has created’ encompasses all forms of evil, regardless of their source.
This includes evil from animals, humans, jinn, insects, or any other created being. It also includes natural calamities like wind or lightning, as well as afflictions in this life or the hereafter.
In essence, the phrase covers all possible sources of harm, seeking protection from any evil that may come from any creation of Allah.
Shaykh Ibn Uthaimeen commented on the hadith narrated by Khaulah bint Hakim (may Allah be pleased with her), he said the phrase “whoever alights somewhere” refers to anyone who stops at a place to rest, eat, sleep, or for other reasons. Whenever they stop, they should recite the aforementioned dua.
Seeking refuge means seeking protection with Allah’s Perfect Words, which encompass both His Universal Words (His divine decrees) and Legislative Words (His revelations).
Allah’s Universal Word is hinted at in Surah Ya-Sin, Verse 82, where He says, “Verily, His Command, when He intends a thing, is only that He says to it, ‘Be!’ – and it is!”
By saying this dua, Allah protects you with His Universal Word, averting harm and evil from you.
Allah’s Legislative Words, as revealed in the Qur’an, offer protection from evil both before and after it occurs. Before its occurrence, reciting certain verses, like Ayat Al-Kursi (Qur’an 2:255) at night, provides a guardian from Allah, keeping Satan at bay until morning.
After evil has occurred, reciting Al-Fatihah (Qur’an Chapter 1) can bring healing, as seen when the Companions recited it over a sting victim, and he recovered promptly.
Remember, the Qur’an is a source of healing. So, dear Muslim brothers and sisters, whenever you stop at a place, whether on land or sea, in a house or elsewhere, hasten to say:
‘I seek refuge with the Perfect Words of Allah from the evil of what He created.’ Nothing will harm you until you leave that place. May Allah grant you success!
Abdur-Razzaq al-Badr advises Muslims to seek refuge in Allah’s perfect words when stopping at a place, saying: “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.”
This dua ensures protection and guardianship by Allah’s permission, and no harm will come until one leaves that place.
Al-Badr emphasizes that this supplication is significant, as it involves seeking refuge in Allah, adhering to Him, and seeking protection through His words.
This is in contrast to the people of Jahiliyah, who sought refuge in jinn, stones, and other creations, which only led to sin, transgression, weakness, and humiliation, as stated in Surah Jinn, Verse 6.
Allah criticizes those who seek refuge elsewhere, highlighting the evil consequences in this life and the Hereafter.
Instead, Allah has legislated seeking refuge solely in Him, as He has the power and authority over His slaves.
No one else can benefit or harm themselves, let alone others. Seeking refuge in Allah alone is the believers’ means of seeking sanctuary.
