Ibn al-Qayyim stated that Allah, the Sovereign, the Most Holy, and the Embodiment of Peace, has ordained that the greeting among Muslims should be “Assalamu Alaikum” (السلام عليكم), which supersedes all other greetings used by non-Muslim nations.
These greetings often contain unrealistic or false expressions, such as wishing someone to live for a thousand years, or inaccurate phrases like “Good morning”, or even inappropriate actions like prostrating as a greeting.
In contrast, the greeting of “Assalamu Alaikum” embodies the meaning of safety and security, which is essential for life and takes precedence over all other objectives.
Humans have two primary goals: to protect themselves from harm and to attain good. Prioritizing safety from evil is more important than seeking good.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) emphasized the significance of spreading salaam as an integral part of faith.
As narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar, a man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him):
“What is the best thing in Islam?” He replied: “Feeding others and giving the greeting of salaam to those you know and those you don’t know.” (Al-Bukhaari, 12, 28, and 6236; Muslim, 39)
