Allahummaghfirli Hayyina Wa Mayyitina Meaning and Arabic

When someone we love passes away, we say a special dua called ‘Allahummaghfirli hayyina wa mayyitina’ during the funeral. This prayer is a way of asking Allah to forgive and have mercy on both the living and the dead.
This prayer is very important because it shows that we care about both the people who are still alive and those who have passed away.
We’re asking Allah to forgive us for our mistakes and to have mercy on us, and we’re also asking Him to forgive and have mercy on our loved ones who have passed away.

Allahummaghfirli Hayyina Wa Mayyitina Meaning in English
Allahummaghfirli hayyina wa mayyitin means O Allah! Forgive our living and our dead, our young and our old, our male and our female, and our present and our absent. O Allah! Whosoever of us You keep alive, keep him alive (faithful) to Islam, and whosoever You cause to die, let him die having Iman (faith). O Allah! Do not deprive us of our reward and do not subject us to trials after his death.
Allahummaghfirli Hayyina Hadith
Narrated AbuHurayrah: When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed over a dead person, he said:
O Allah, forgive those of us who are living and those of us who are dead, those of us who are present and those of us who are absent, our young and our old, our male and our female. O Allah, to whomsoever of us Thou givest life grant him life as a believer, and whomsoever of us Thou takest in death take him in death as a follower of Islam. O Allah, do not withhold from us the reward (of faith) and do not lead us astray after his death.
Sunan Abi Dawud 3201

When you say (O Allah! Forgive our living and our dead, our young and our old, our male and our female, and our present and our absent), you’re asking Allah to forgive and have mercy on:
- Your loved ones who are still alive
- Those who have passed away
- The young and the old
- The men and the women
- Those who are present with you and those who are absent
Then, when you say (O Allah! Whosoever of us You keep alive, keep him alive (faithful) to Islam, and whosoever You cause to die, let him die having Iman (faith)), you’re asking Allah to:
- Keep those who are alive faithful to Islam
- Let those who pass away die with faith in their hearts
Finally, when you say (O Allah! Do not deprive us of our reward and do not subject us to trials after his death), you’re asking Allah to:
- Not deprive you of the reward for your good deeds
- Not put you through difficult trials and tribulations after the death of your loved one
This dua is a beautiful way to ask Allah to take care of your loved ones, both living and dead, and to keep them faithful to Islam. It’s also a way to ask Allah to make things easy for you and your family during difficult times.
