Transliteration
Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min sharri sam’i, wa min sharri basari, wa min sharri lisani, wa min sharri qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyee.

Hadith Text
Shakal bin Humaid RA reported: I asked: “O Messenger of Allah, teach me a Dua.” He (ﷺ) said, “Say:
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing, and from the evil of my sight, and from the evil of my tongue, and from the evil of my heart and from the evils of my semen (private parts).

In another narration: It was narrated from Shutair bin Shakal bin Humaid, that his father said: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, teach me a supplication from which I may benefit.’ He said: ‘Say:
اللَّهُمَّ عَافِنِي مِنْ شَرِّ سَمْعِي وَبَصَرِي وَلِسَانِي وَقَلْبِي وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَنِيِّي
Transliteration: Allahumma ‘aafini min sharri sam’i, wa basari, wa lisani, wa qalbi, wa min sharri maniyyee.
Meaning in English: O Allah, protect me from the evil of my hearing, my seeing, my tongue and my heart, and from the evil of my sperm. – Meaning private organ.

Shaykh Muhammad Ali Ādam Al-Ityubi explained that this Hadith is authentic (Sahih).
“…from the evil of my hearing…” means protecting oneself from not hearing the truth, like failing to encourage good deeds and discourage bad ones, or seeking refuge from hearing lies and false statements, which can lead to disobedience.
“…from the evil of my sight…” means guarding against looking at things that are forbidden. This includes looking at fellow Muslims in a disrespectful way and neglecting to look at things that are good and beneficial, like the Quran, signs of Allah, blessings, and one’s spouse.
“…from the evil of my tongue…” means refraining from speaking about things that are forbidden or irrelevant.
“…evil of my heart…” means protecting the heart from being preoccupied with anything other than Allah and what He has forbidden, such as malice, envy, self-admiration, and other destructive emotions.
“..the evil of my semen” means safeguarding oneself from situations or actions that could lead to forbidden acts, like looking at and touching unrelated women, which could lead to immoral behavior.

- The believer faces various internal and external dangers, and overcoming them is only possible with the assistance of Allah. This highlights the importance of depending on Allah rather than relying solely on one’s own efforts or the efforts of others.
Regarding the statement, “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing,” it means seeking protection from hearing things that are forbidden, such as polytheism, disbelief, backbiting, gossip, lies, falsehood, and listening to anything other than the truth, such as reminders and advice.
This emphasizes the importance of being selective about what we listen to and ensuring that our ears are exposed to beneficial and righteous content.
He (peace be upon him) said: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the evil of my hearing.” This means asking for protection from hearing things that are forbidden, like polytheism, disbelief, backbiting, gossip, lies, falsehood, and even listening to music.
It also includes avoiding anything that isn’t truthful, such as reminders and advice that are not based on truth.
He (peace be upon him) said: “and from the evil of my sight.” This seeks protection from seeing things that are displeasing, including inappropriate aspects of women, improper glances at children, looking with disdain at any creation, and neglecting to appreciate the wonders of creation in the earth and sky.
He (peace be upon him) said: “and from the evil of my tongue.” This is a plea to be saved from speaking forbidden words like lying, backbiting, gossiping, cursing, and slandering others.
It emphasizes speaking only the truth, praising and thanking Allah, encouraging good deeds, discouraging bad ones, staying silent when unnecessary, and avoiding vain talk and frivolity.
He (peace be upon him) says: “and from the evil of my heart.” This seeks protection from the negative qualities within the heart, like hypocrisy, envy, hatred, showing off, pride, evil thoughts, corrupt beliefs, and excessive love for worldly desires and temptations.
He says: “and from the evils of my private parts.” This is a request to be shielded from engaging in forbidden acts such as fornication, adultery, masturbation, or any actions that lead to immoral behavior.
This acknowledges the significant trial of prohibited intimacy and its potential negative consequences, especially in times of widespread temptation and corruption.
The specificity of seeking refuge from these body parts lies in their connection to desires and pleasures, as well as being the roots of evil.
Allah, in His wisdom, created these faculties for beneficial purposes, such as acts of worship and contemplating His creations, but they should be used to prevent oneself from falling into sinful behaviors leading to destruction in this world and the hereafter.
