The full Dua is written in Arabic as:

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

Transliteration

The supplication is transliterated as Allahumma inni as ‘alukal-huda wat-tuqa wal-‘afafa wal-ghina.

Allahumma inni as’alukal huda means O Allah, I ask You for guidance and piety, abstinence and contentment.

Allahumma Inni As Alukal Huda Hadith

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (رضي الله عنه) relates that the Prophet (ﷺ) would supplicate, O Allah, verily, I ask You for guidance (Huda) and piety (Tuqa), abstinence (from begging people) (‘Afaf) and contentment (Ghina).

This amazing dua consists of four important requests:

1. Seeking guidance (al-Hidayah),
2. Being righteous (al-Taqwa),
3. Avoiding the need to ask others for things (al-Iffah), and
4. Being content with oneself (al-Ghina).

According to At-Teebee (may Allah have mercy on him), asking for guidance and righteousness is mentioned broadly to include everything necessary for a good life, such as livelihood, success in the afterlife, and having good character.

It also covers avoiding harmful things like associating partners with Allah, committing sins, and behaving badly.

The requests for abstinence and contentment are specific examples of what’s already included in seeking guidance and righteousness.

Imam An-Nawawi explained that in this supplication, asking for abstinence and contentment means staying away from things that are not allowed and not depending on others.

Being content (al-Ghina) means feeling satisfied with oneself and not needing what others have.

Sheikh Abdur-Rahman ibn Sa’di, in a short explanation of this supplication, said it’s one of the most helpful prayers because it asks for the best in both religion and the world.

Seeking guidance means seeking knowledge, while piety means doing good deeds and avoiding what is forbidden. This makes our religious life good and orderly because understanding the truth and obeying Allah and His Messenger lead to righteousness.

Abstinence (al-Afaf) means not relying on others for what you need, and contentment (al-Ghina) means feeling happy with what Allah has given you. This includes:

• Not feeling dependent on people,
• Not letting your heart get too attached to them,
• Feeling satisfied with what Allah provides,
• Being happy with whatever you have, and
• Finding peace in having enough.

When you have abstinence and contentment, you find happiness and success in this life, and your heart feels calm. This is what the Quran calls “the Good Life” (al-Hayat al-Tayyibah) (Qur’an, 16:97).

Chastity: According to Sheikh Uthaymeen, being chaste means staying away from things that are not allowed and not being too focused on worldly desires.

So, being chaste in all its forms means avoiding all kinds of bad behavior, like looking at things you shouldn’t, touching inappropriately, listening to bad things, and engaging in harmful sexual acts.

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim said: A chaste person looks friendly and kind, and people feel comfortable around them. But someone who does bad things looks gloomy and strange, and people feel uncomfortable around them.

Sheikh Ibn Uthaimeen explained in Riyadus Saliheen: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) asked Allah for these four things, he was asking for guidance.

Guidance means having useful knowledge and doing good deeds, which some people call having the right intentions and actually doing good things.

So, when someone asks Allah for guidance, they’re asking to learn what’s right and to be helped in doing it. This is what’s meant in the Quran when it says, “Guide us to the straight path” (Al-Faatihah: 6). It’s asking to be shown what’s good and to be helped in doing it.

People can be divided into four groups when it comes to this:

1. Those who know what’s right and do it.
2. Those who don’t know what’s right and don’t do it.
3. Those who know what’s right but don’t do it.
4. Those who do what’s right but don’t know why.

The best group is the first one, who know what’s right and do it. This is what’s asked for when we say, “O Allah, guide me.”

As for piety, or Taqwaa, it means following what Allah has commanded and avoiding what He has forbidden.

It comes from the word “Al-Wiqaayaah,” which means protection. You can only be protected from Allah’s punishment if you obey His commands and stay away from what He has forbidden.

And when we talk about chastity, it means staying away from any kind of inappropriate sexual behavior.

This includes not looking at things you shouldn’t, not touching inappropriately, not engaging in harmful sexual acts, and not listening to bad things. Illegal sexual behavior is really bad, and we seek refuge with Allah from it.

Allah says in the Quran, “And come not near to unlawful intimacy for verily it is a Faahishah (i.e. a thing that transgresses its limit: a great sin)” (17:32). It’s harmful to your character, your family, your heart, and your religion.

As for contentment, it means being happy with what Allah has given you and not being jealous of what others have. Even if you don’t have a lot, you should still be happy and not always wanting more.

Contentment is a great treasure that doesn’t fade away. Sometimes Allah gives people enough, but they’re still greedy and always want more.

When you ask Allah for contentment, you’re asking Him to make you happy with what you have and to give you what you need to be independent.

So, these four supplications are really important, just like how the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to ask for them.
