[Collected by Bukhari in al-Adab al-Mufrad 639 & authenticated by Albaani in Silsilah al-Saheehah 1542. Translated by Ayman Fox]

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “…and I seek refuge in You from evil – all of it: that which is present in this world and that which may come in the hereafter, the evil that I know of and the evil that I don’t…”

This includes every type of evil, whether it’s obvious or hidden, whether it affects us now or later.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said, “…O Allah! I ask You for the good of what Your servant and Your Prophet has asked of You, and I seek refuge in You from the evil that Your servant and Your Prophet has sought refuge from…”

This confirms the previous statement and shows the importance of following the Prophet’s guidance in our prayers.

The Prophet’s choice of supplication is preferred because of his wise advice, his deep care for the well-being of the believers, and his sincerity towards them. May Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him!

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “…O Allah! I ask of You for Paradise and the words or actions that lead one closer to it…”

This is a dua to achieve success in entering Paradise, as well as mastery over the means to reach it.

By specifically requesting Paradise, it emphasizes the importance of this ultimate good, which is the most perfect and everlasting.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said, “…and I seek refuge in You from the Hellfire and from the words or actions that lead one closer to it…”

This is a dua for protection from Hellfire and from anything that might lead to its punishment.

By seeking refuge from Hellfire specifically, it highlights the severity of this ultimate evil, which is the most disastrous and everlasting.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) further said, “…and I ask You to make every divine decree for me to be good.”

This is a dua asking Allah to make every decree that He has ordained for us to be for our ultimate good.
