Hadith Text

The Hadith reference for this dua is [Hadith number 2160 in Sunan Abi Dawood, where it’s mentioned that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used this prayer. This shows that it’s a good practice to follow the example of the Prophet in our daily lives.

Amr b. Shu’aib on his father’s authority said that his grandfather (Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-‘As) reported the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “If one of you marries a woman or buys a slave, he should say:

O Allah, I ask You to grant me of the good that ensues from her or that You placed into her nature, and to protect me from the evil that ensues from her or that You placed into her nature.”

When he buys a camel, he should take hold of the top of its hump and say the same.”

Abu Dawud said: Abu Sa’id added the following words in his version: He should then tale hold of her forelock and pray for blessing in the case of a woman or a slave.

Recorded by Abū Dāwūd 2160, Ibn Mājah 2252, Al-Tabarānī in Al-Du’ā 1309 and others.

He said: “I ask You to grant me of the good that ensues from her,” meaning treating her well, taking care of her, being faithful with your wealth, and having similar qualities.

He said: “And the good that You placed into her nature” which means creating her with good manners and pleasing characteristics.

Shaykh Muḥammad Nāsir al-Dīn al-Albānī (may Allah have mercy on him) explained: This narration shows that Allah is the Creator of both good and evil, unlike those who believe that evil doesn’t come from Him.

Believing that Allah creates both good and evil doesn’t go against His perfection. In fact, it’s part of His perfection. You can find more details about this in books like “Shafā’ al-‘Alīl fil-Qadhā’i wal-Qadari wat-Talīl” by Ibnul-Qayyim.

As for whether this supplication is recommended when buying something like a car, Sheikh Albani answer is: yes, because we hope for the good it brings and fear any potential harm. (Adāb az-Zaffaf 1/93)

So, when you say this dua, you’re asking Allah for all the good things that come from your wife or the new thing you bought, like a car, and you’re also asking for protection from any bad things that might come from it. It’s a way of asking for blessings and safety in your new relationship or possession.
