Alhamdulillahillazi Aafani In Arabic and English

Alhamdulillahilladzi afani is a specific dua (prayer) that is recited when witnessing a calamity befall someone else, expressing gratitude to Allah for being spared from the affliction.
Interestingly, there is another dua that begins with the same phrase, “Alhamdulillahilladzi afani,” but it serves a different purpose – it is a prayer said upon waking up, thanking Allah for the blessing of a new day and for being spared from harm during sleep.

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي عَافَانِي مِمَّا ابْتَلاَكَ بِهِ وَفَضَّلَنِي عَلَى كَثِيرٍ مِمَّنْ خَلَقَ تَفْضِيلاً
Transliteration: “Alhamudu lillahil-ladhi afani mimmab-talaka bihi wa faddalani ala kathirim-mimman khalaqa tafdeela“

All praise is for Allah, Who saved me from what He has afflicted you with and favored me more than many others He created.
Alhamdulillah Hillazi Aafani Hadith
Umar narrated that: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever sees a person afflicted and say: ‘All praise is due to Allah Who saved me from that which He has afflicted you with, and blessed me greatly over many of those whom He has created,
(Al-ḥamdulillāhi alladhī āfānī mimmabtalāka bihī wa faḍḍalanīalā kathīrin mimman khalaqa tafḍīla)’ then he shall be saved from that affliction for as long as he lives.”

Reciting this dua is believed to protect the person from experiencing a similar calamity.
However, it’s important to note that this dua should be said softly, so as not to offend or hurt the person who is already afflicted. The idea is to express gratitude and humility, not to appear superior or insensitive to the person’s struggles.

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي عَافَانِي فِي جَسَدِي، وَرَدَّ عَلَيَّ رُوحِي، وَأَذِنَ لِي بِذِكْرِهِ
Transliteration: Alhamdu lillahil-lathee afanee fee jasadee waradda alayya roohee wa-athina lee bithikrih.
Meaning
All praise is for Allah who restored to me my health and returned my soul and has allowed me to remember Him.
