Surah Takasur (Alhakumut takasur surah) is the 102nd part of the Quran. It warns us not to get too busy with worldly things and collecting wealth. It reminds us that life is short and we should focus on what comes after life, the afterlife.
It’s like a wake-up call to not get too distracted by things that won’t last, and instead, focus on what’s truly important and eternal.
Surah Alhakumut Takasur in Arabic
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ (١) حَتَّى زُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ (٢) كَلاَّ سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ (٣) ثُمَّ كَلاَّ سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ (٤) كَلاَّ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عِلْمَ الْيَقِينِ (٥) لَتَرَوُنَّ الْجَحِيمَ (٦) ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيْنَ الْيَقِينِ (٧) ثُمَّ لَتُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِيمِ (٨)

- Al haaku mut takathur
- Hatta zurtumul maqaabir
- Kalla sawfa ta’lamoon
- Thumma kalla sawfa ta’lamoon
- Kalla law ta’lamoona ‘ilmal yaqeen
- Latara-wun nal jaheem
- Thumma latara wunnaha ‘ainal yaqeen
- Thumma latus alunna yauma-izin ‘anin na’eem

- Competition for worldly gain distracts you.
- Until you come to your graves.
- Nay; you will come to know.
- Again, nay; you will come to know.
- Nay; if you knew for certain [the consequences of your actions, you would not act as you do].
- You will surely see the blazing fire.
- Again, you will surely see it with absolute certainty.
- Then on that day you will surely be asked about worldly bounties.

This surah was revealed in Makkah and has 8 verses. It warns people who only care about this life and want more and more money, possessions, and power. They forget about the afterlife.
This is a common problem today, where people are so busy collecting things that they forget what’s truly important. The Quran calls this “at-takaathur”, or being greedy for worldly things.
Allah wants us to stop worshipping worldly things and focus on what matters. When we’re too busy collecting wealth, we forget about morals and values. We forget the purpose of life.
On Judgment Day, Allah will ask us if we were thankful for His blessings, like health and food. He’ll ask if we worshipped Him alone.
This life is short, and people who only care about worldly things won’t be prepared for what comes next. This surah is a warning to focus on what truly matters.
Allah is rebuking His people for being distracted from what they were created for: worshipping Him alone and knowing Him. Instead, they’re competing with each other for worldly things like wealth, status, and power.
This distraction continues until they die, and then they’ll realize what’s truly important. But by then, it will be too late to change their ways.
Allah is warning them, saying, “You will know the consequences of your actions.” If they knew for sure what would happen, they wouldn’t be so focused on worldly gain. But since they don’t know, they’re stuck in their ways.
On Judgment Day, they’ll see the fiery punishment prepared for those who didn’t believe. They’ll be asked if they were thankful for the blessings they had in life and if they used them to obey or disobey Allah. If they weren’t thankful and used them to disobey, they’ll be punished.
Allah is reminding them that they had their chance to enjoy good things in life, but now they’ll face a humiliating punishment for being arrogant and rebellious.
