Hadith Text

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “When anyone of you go to bed, he should shake out his bed with the inside of his waist sheet, for he does not know what has come on to it after him, and then he should say:

‘Bismika Rabbi Wada`tu Janbi wa bika arfa’uhu, In amsakta nafsi farhamha wa in arsaltaha fahfazha bima tahfazu bihi ibadakas-salihin.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 6320
Bismika Rabbi Wadatu Janbi

This hadith emphasizes the importance of mindfulness and seeking Allah’s protection in all aspects of life, even in our daily sleep.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught us to shake out our bedsheets with the inside of our waist sheets before sleeping, as we are unaware of what may have come into contact with our beds during the day.

Then, we should recite a prayer seeking Allah’s protection and mercy, so that He may safeguard us from harm or danger while we sleep.

This hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to remember Allah in all aspects of their daily lives, including sleep. It also highlights the importance of mindfulness and seeking refuge in Allah at all times.

According to Sheikh ibn Uthaimeen, dusting off the bedsheet with part of the loin cloth three times can protect the cloth from any impurities on the bed, emphasizing the importance of cleanliness and purity.
